Ever wondered why some people, despite the risks of smoking, are able to live a long, cancer-free life?

New research from UCLA has taken on the subject and as it turns out — it’s in the genes.  They found that smokers who are able to live a long life have specific genes that promote that.

These genes help the body’s cells protect themselves from the damage of smoking.

Overall, these genes were also linked with an 11 percent lower incidence of cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, tobacco use accounts for at least 30 percent of all cancer deaths, causing 87 percent of lung cancer deaths in men and 70 percent of lung cancer deaths in women.

The new research was published in “The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences.
