Struggles of Being a Latino Vegetarian

Soon it’ll be the holidays which means a lot of delicious food will bring family and friends together. But if you’re a vegetarian, you might be a little apprehensive about these social gatherings. Here are some of the struggles of being a non-meat eater in a Latin household.

1. Your abuelo genuinely asking, “but you still eat chicken, right?”

2. The moment you mention you’re a vegetarian the party stops.

3. Having your dad suggest to simply pick out the pork from the rice.

4. Being compared to a rabbit who “eats animal food.”

5. Constantly hearing your family explain how they could never give up meat.

6. Going into a family gather not knowing if there was something you could eat.

7. Which led to often starving.

8. But no matter the struggles, I would never go back.
