Solomon O. Kanu: Immigration advocacy law firm
People immigrate to the United States from all over the world, from many cultures and nations, and all for one main reason: “The American Dream,” explains Solomon O. Kanu, an immigration attorney and founder of Kanu & Associates, P.C. law firm in Phoenix.
“I have been there and done that as an immigrant myself, and so I understand why people come here and why they want to stay, live, work and contribute to this great country,” he says. “They come to create a good future for themselves and their children. They are willing to trade hard work for money and respect for themselves as human beings. This is their opportunity to realize the American Dream. They are good people. They are very well educated, intelligent and have tons to offer. Therefore, we must protect them.”
Kanu says he specializes in legal issues such as immigration, criminal defense, small business transaction and real estate because each of these areas connect with each other.
“When we are helping clients with their immigration issues, they sometimes are caught driving without a driver license. Then we represent in court on this criminal defense issue so they won’t be deported,” he says.
“If you are a foreign national investing in a commercial enterprise here, we help you apply for an investment visa. Then you may apply for a immigration visa to protect your investment. Or you may need real estate advice if you invest in a company here,” Kanu says. “Our attorneys are immigrants themselves. Our staff speaks Spanish. We understand what it is like to come to a new country and start a new life. We believe strongly in the American Dream and we work hard to make that dream available to everyone.”
Like many of his clients, Solomon Kanu immigrated to the United States. He was born in Nigeria and attended universities in India, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics, and a master’s in business finance. He graduated with a Juris Doctor degree from a law school in Michigan in 1999. In 2001, he was admitted to practice law in Arizona.
Kanu relates that he enjoys helping other immigrants with his expertise. “I have always wanted to help people since day one of law school. What I do is my calling, not just my job. It’s something I have a great passion for.”
He proudly explains that his law firm has represented immigrants from 20 different countries, including India, China, England, Germany, France, Canada, and Nigeria. “Most people in Arizona associate immigrants with Mexicans. And yes, they continue to be the bedrock of our firm. But diversity of people is what the United States is all about.”
Immigrant reform in the U.S. Congress is a dynamic he wholeheartedly supports, he says. Young people like the DREAMers who have lived in the U.S. since they were children deserve a chance to become legal residents, he adds.
“Immigrants are coming out of the shadows every day. They can’t deport 11 million people. We must do something about it. And only thing we can do is to give them opportunity. What do we lose if we give them a driver license? The reform will go through. There is no other option and it is only a matter of time.”
The founder of Kanu & Associates expresses pride in his law firm’s growth. All his clients receive skilled representation and compassionate treatment, he says.
“A lot of people ask me the question, Why you? And I always answer, Why not me? I tell them that in my firm we have a credo of P.D.F. – Persistence, Discipline, and Focus. We are persistent in advocating their cases. We are disciplined by being in the office early in the morning until late at night working on their cases. And we are focused on immigrants – we want to help them change their lives.”
