Mary Rabago: A New Chapter Begins for Former Univision Anchor
By: Cindy G. Castillo
March of 2013 marked the 20-year anniversary of Mary Rabago in the media industry. Beginning her position as main anchor for Noticias Univision 33 in 1999, she is now ready to embark on a whole new journey as entrepreneur.
Rabago is opening her own production company, “Paloma Productions MR” along with her own radio and TV show, “Con Mary Rabago”.
“I’m really happy. I think this is one of the highlights of my career, this moment that I’m living right now.” Rabago said.
Blessed with the support of her husband and children, Rabago knew this was the right time to take on this new challenge and knew she was ready mentally as well as emotionally. She relates to women who are challenged with finding the right balance between her role as a mom and a professional, and it was this balance that led her to take this risk.
“I had to ask for days off in order for me to be at their games. On the phone I would be helping them with the homework [or] in my lunch break but it wasn’t the same because I wasn’t at home. It’s amazing now, something that I had been missing out on,” Rabago recalls.
With this in mind, she deeply enjoys being her own boss now. Mostly, she is able to have more control over setting up appointments based on her schedule and what her priorities are. Thus allowing her to get home by three o’clock, take off her professional hat, and become a mom.
“I have no regrets. My older son started high school so it’s not negotiable for me not to be home; these are the last four years he’s going to be home, and the most important of his life.”
Rabago believes that when priorities are in order, God will put everything in place. She explains and relates in how women can become so focused on going up the new corporate ladder, and in the midst of all that might “sacrifice the little things in life that are the ones that really have the biggest meaning.”
Backed with an extensive background of experience and devotion in mind, things have started coming together fairly quickly for Rabago. The idea of starting her own production company and eventually a TV show began six months before resigning from Univision. Now, three months after, she finds herself about to start her own TV show, just launched her own website, and is succeeding with her radio show.
“Just like I have an amazing support at home with my husband and kids, I have been able to surround myself with amazing professionals that really trust and believe in the same project, and everything is becoming a reality quicker than I thought. I’m really blessed in that area.” Rabago said.
Rabago recognizes the hard work and effort that starting a new company entails and is currently working in campaigns to promote Paloma Productions Mr. and emphasizing its main purpose: to highlight the Hispanic community in a different way in the general market.
“I think the way that really Hispanics contribute and all the power that we have hasn’t been acknowledged yet in the way that it should be.”
Characterized by being relatable with the community, Rabago’s chooses the title “Con Mary Rabago” for both the TV and radio show to allow people to know they are part of her project, and that they can relate to her when addressing issues faced in their daily lives such as immigration, education, and finances.
Rabago’s biggest motivation is knowing that people are thankful with her for keeping them informed and supporting them on their issues. This has ultimately changed her persona and her views towards her profession.
“The biggest pay you can get is not being in the bigger market or receive the bigger pay, it’s knowing that I chose the right thing and that this is where I need to be. This is where my people need me.” Rabago said.
Mary Rabago invites people to watch every Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Azteca America 41 “Con Mary Rabago”, as well as every day on 1190AM. Videos of her shows and live streaming will also be available through her website www.maryrabago.com.
“What can I say, I feel like I’m in the moon right now; I’m really happy.”
