Laura Madrid Celebrates 10 Years of Community-Driven Leadership Behind Onda 1190AM

“From ten years ago to today, I don’t know how it happened; it just … is.”

Laura Madrid, General Manager for Onda 1190AM, gushes with excitement at the thought that it’s now been ten years leading a station focused on delivering information that is both useful and educational for the community.

“For me personally, it means that I know I’m capable of doing anything,” Madrid said, “because I don’t give up very easily and I’m passionate about the things that I do and the people that I work with.”

Throughout its journey, Onda 1190AM has been able to stay firm behind its mission of being informative of the things that are happening within the community; topics such as health, education, immigration and other political issues.

“Those are things our community needs,” she said,” and if you can provide that to your community, then that makes your community much better.”

But the only way that this information is able to reach listeners day by day, is thanks to the help of a devoted and passionate team that has stood next to Madrid for years.

“I’m very grateful for them,” she said, “I’m here because of them; because they chose to be part of this team and this is really a collaboration between all of us.”

Onda 1190AM takes pride in being a station that stands behind the community and listens to what it has to say. In the same way, they have been able to build a loyal base of listeners that have followed their station for years.

“To the people who have listened for so long I would say thank you because without our listeners, we can’t continue and thank you for always supporting our clients and our sponsors,” she said.

Madrid hopes to continue working with organizations that want to make a diference and that want to join the help that the Hispanic community needs in Arizona. If there’s one thing she isn’t afraid of, she said, is change.

“If we need to change with the way media is changing, then we’ll be changing as well. There’s a lot of things that can happen from now to another 10 years.”

The sky is the limit when looking into the future. For next year, Madrid hopes to fully dive into the upcoming 2016 presidential elections. “One of the responsibilities I feel like I have is that we need to provide [our audience] with more information regarding who’s going to run our nation and our state.”
