Roberto Reveles to be awarded the Orgullo Award through the Stylos Awards hosted on Nov. 22nd

The Stylos Awards, presented by the Isac Amaya Foundation, will pay tribute to long time civil rights activist Roberto Reveles through their highest honor: the “Orgullo Award.” The Orgullo Award is a legacy recognition given to people that have led a life of service and left a mark on the lives of the people in their community.

“It’s an honor, and I’m excited and very proud to have an opportunity to associate myself with a group that is doing so much valuable work in getting funds to help Latino students with their education,” Reveles said.

Mr. Reveles served 4 years in the Air Force during the Korean War. He then worked for 5 different congressmen, and later for a mining company in San Francisco where he retired as Vice President of Government Affairs in 1992. Afterward, he dedicated himself to community issues devoting time to organizations such as the Association for Development of a Better Environment (ADOBE), the Gold Canyon Arts Council, the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum, and the Arizona Hispanic Community Forum, among others.

“Mr. Reveles continues to be a powerful voice in the defense of our community’s rights. He has stood up against injustices while leading important civil rights organizations and challenging misplaced priorities of elected officials,” said Luis Avila of the Isac Amaya Foundation. “He is someone we continuously learn from, he models defiance of the status quo and a commitment to justice.”

Something that Reveles wishes he could teach younger generations is that anyone who is committed to their beliefs is capable of opening up their own opportunities to make a difference.

“Everyone has an opportunity to succeed regardless of where you start, regardless of what humble beginnings and quite frankly, regardless of the barriers that are put up in front of us,” he said.

Reveles has worked with many other organizations, including Unidos en Arizona, Somos America/We Are America, Humane Borders, Arizona Latin@ Arts and Cultural Center (ALAC), Mano a Mano Unidos Foundation, the Raul Castro Institute, the Morrison Institute’s Latino Public Policy Center, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona.

His award will be presented during Stylos Awards 2014, which will take place on Saturday, November 22 at The Pressroom in Downtown Phoenix. The awards ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event go to the Isac Amaya Foundation’s scholarship fund.
