Sony Pictures is bringing one of the most anticipated movies of the year to theaters on July 24th, PIXELS, starring Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Josh Gad, and Peter Dinklage. This hilarious science-fiction action-comedy film brings some of the most beloved video game characters to life, including, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Q Bert, and more! Before PIXELS hits the big screen, here are some memorable films that were based on beloved video games.

PIXELS (2015)
As kids in the 1980s, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie “The Fire Blaster” Plant (Peter Dinklage) saved the world thousands of times – at 25 cents a game in the video arcades. Now, they’re going to have to do it for real. In PIXELS, when intergalactic aliens discover video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth, using the video games as the models for their assaults — and now-U.S. President Cooper must call on his old-school arcade friends to save the world from being destroyed by PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.
SUPER MARIO BROS. (1993)
This fantasy adventure comedy film is a live-action adaptation of the 1985 Nintendo video game of the same name. It tells the story of the eponymous Mario brothers, as they find a parallel universe, ruled by the ruthless dictator King Koopa, who seeks to merge the two dimensions together so that he can rule both worlds.
LARA CRAFT: TOMB RAIDER (2001)
This 2001 action film based on the popular Tomb Raider video game series features the character Lara Croft portrayed by Angelina Jolie.
RESIDENT EVIL SERIES (2002-PRESENT)
A science fiction action-horror film series loosely based upon the Capcom video games of the same name tells the story of the fictional Umbrella Corporation, responsible for the zombie apocalypse, which occurred after the corporation’s T-virus infected the Earth’s population.
SILENT HILL (2006)
A psychological horror film adapted from the survival horror video game series follows Rose, who takes her adopted daughter Sharon to the town of Silent Hill. Arriving at Silent Hill, Rose is involved in a car accident and awakens to find Sharon missing; while searching for her daughter, she fights a local cult while uncovering Sharon’s connection to the town’s past.
