charlie sheenCharlie Sheen has changed his name back to his birth name, Carlos Estevez.

The former Two and a Half Men star Charlie Sheen has opted to go with the name he was born with for his role in the upcoming film Machete Kills. According to TMZ, this will be the first time Sheen is not being billed as “Charlie Sheen” in his professional career.

For those who weren’t aware, Sheen’s father Martin Sheen was born Ramón Antonio Gerardo Estevez to an Irish mother and a Spanish father. The elder Sheen changed his name to Martin to help him get roles in Hollywood (but never changed it officially), and son Charlie followed his father’s footsteps once he was older.

We all remember the interview Sheen gave to Univision last year, during which he spoke about his connection to his Latino heritage – or lack thereof.

“I don’t wake up feeling Latino. I’m a white guy in America,” he said. “I was born in New York and grew up in Malibu.”

Whether you agree with Charlie’s decision to be “Charlie” and not “Carlos” all these years, it seems fitting that he decided to go with his birth name for Machete Kills. After all, this particular project is a labor of love by director Robert Rodriguez, known for great Latino pride in his work. The Mexican-American director/screenwriter is also the force behind the new Latino network titled El Rey Network – part of a group of networks targeting Latinos in the U.S., after Comcast and NBC Universal merged back in 2011.

The 47-year old will hopefully feel a bit more in touch after this role, however you never know what to expect from Sheen.
