When to Toss Out Make-up

We often have numerous excuses as to why we do not re-up on our make up as often as we do other cosmetic items. Whether it is price or it is the last make of our favorite brand, we are just reluctant to toss it out.  So when is it appropriate to let go of the past and splurge on some fresh new make-up?

Although most make-up does not have an expiration date listed, it does expire. Outdated or over used make-up can cause skin issues if repeatedly used.  It’s true. Mascara usually expires after 3 months. The mascara bottle is the ideal breeding ground for bacteria because of its wet and dark environment.  One way to prolong your mascara a little longer is to refrain from pumping the mascara wand in and out of the tube. This causes air to enter the bottle and causes more bacteria to breed. Let’s be honest though, who doesn’t repeatedly jab their mascara wand into the tube to get a little extra volume and lift? After 3 months, you are better off just letting it go.

Make-up made of liquid such as liquid eyeliner poses similar problems to that of mascara. Therefore, liquid eyeliner and eye shadow have the same life span as the mascara, 3 months.

If the same rules apply for other liquid make-up similarly it applies to foundations made of liquid as well. You should generally throw away liquid foundation after 6 months. If you decide to keep it longer, you will notice that it starts to get really oily and can even thicken up. Since most people use their fingers to apply their foundation, bacteria growth is inevitable and we all know how bacteria can destroy skin…can you say acne?

Lipstick has the ability to last the longest out of all make-up products, especially if it’s a good quality lipstick, finally some good news as we most commonly get addicted to our favorite lipstick right before our favorite brand goes out of production! If you have a quality lipstick then it can last up to 2 years. However, it usually won’t have the same look as the first day you bought it.

Although makeup manufacturers do not usually include an expiration date on your cosmetics, there definitely are dates when you should throw away your make-up. To keep your skin looking fresh and healthy take note as to when you begin using your cosmetics and when it is time to replenish your stash.
