Tucson’s Pueblo High School Sophomore Alicia Reyes sets state’s three-point Record for a game
By Francisco Romero
Pueblo High School’s sophomore Alicia Reyes made 17 three-point baskets and finished with 57 points against Cholla High School in a 98-11 Pueblo victory Wednesday night.
Reyes broke Sierra Linda High School Janae Gonzales’ record of 14 three-three pointers, set last season.
“I can’t even believe it right now. I told myself before the game, that I could break it, but I still cannot believe it,” Reyes told us after the game. “When I hit the record breaking three-pointer I could not stop smiling, I could see my teammates cheering for me, it was very exciting,” she added.
“She is my shooter, she is my best shooter,” said Pueblo’s head coach Ismael Galindo.
For Galindo, the record-breaking night for Reyes came as no surprise; it was just a matter of time.
“I have coached Alicia since she was in elementary,” Galindo said. “She has played with my daughter since they were at Drachman elementary and Safford Middle School, where they won championships there, it would be icing on the cake if they were to win a championship at Pueblo.”
The sophomore is the team’s leading scorer averaging 15 points per game.
With the win against Cholla, the Warriors record is now at 19-3.
Pueblo is considered one of the favorites to with state this season.
“We are a scrappy team,” said Galindo, “but we play hard, it’s all about hard work with this young ladies, then more hard work and hard work.”
Reyes is not only a great basketball player; in the classroom she holds a 3.8 grade point average, a great combination to see her play at the next level soon.
