Hermosillo Native Cesar Salazar’s hit Sends Wildcats Baseball team to College World Series
By Francisco Romero. – The Arizona Wildcats Baseball team is heading to the College World Series for the 17th time and second since 2012.
Arizona beat Mississippi State 6-5 during the weekend and became the first team to advance.
With the bases loaded and two outs in the 11th inning, catcher Cesar Salazar singled home the winning run. Arizona was trailing 5-1 heading into the eight innings, but was able to come back and win the game.
Arizona’s head coach Jay Johnson, just hired a year ago to take over the baseball program, is heading to his first College World Series as a head coach.
“I pride myself on knowing the right thing to say, but I’m speechless right now,” coach Jay Johnson said after the game. “This is the best moment of my life.”
Arizona’s Cameron Ming, who pitched two scoreless innings in relief, earned the win for the Wildcats.
Salazar, a native of Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico is the Wildcats catcher, a freshmen who attended Sahuaro High School last year.
Salazar is currently batting .290 with 28 runs batted in.
The NCAA Baseball College World Series will take place June 18-29 in Omaha, Nebraska.
