Cubs move on to NLCS in Quest for First World Series Championship in more than 100 Years
By Francisco Romero. – Who said it would be easy? Just ask the Chicago Cubs fans, a generation that has never seen their team win a World Series. To be exact the Cubs last won a World Series in 1908.
Tuesday night the Cubs took a step closer towards their goal by beating the San Francisco Giants 6-5 and advancing to the National League Championship Series against the winner of the Dodgers – Nationals in the National League Division Series.
Tough it was, as the Giants starting pitcher Matt Moore held the Cubs in check for eight innings allowing the Cubs only 2 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 10.
A resilient Cubs team was able to score 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning, against the Giants bullpen, to take a 6 – 5 lead, a lead they never relinquished.
“We don’t quit. That’s really what it comes down to. You hear that all the time, everybody says it, but you have to actually live it. And I have to tell you, I’ve seen it so many times from this group. And that’s a big part of our philosophy. And I like to keep things simple, and that’s simple, and I can’t — I don’t want to get complicated. We just play 27 outs,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon told the assembled press after the game.
Javier Baez who singled in the winning run in the top of the 9th inning was glad to see Moore out of the game, “Today, we didn’t give up. Their pitcher, he threw a great game. He was hitting his spot, he was getting to us. He threw eight innings, obviously. We just made their bullpen pay.
The Cubs beat the Giants 3 games to 1 in a best-of-five series.
