Costa Rica beats U.S. 4-0 in World Cup Qualifying Game; How could it…?
By Francisco Romero. – No, the headline is not wrong and yes, the score was 4-0 in favor of Costa Rica as the United States Men’s National Team fell twice in less than 5 days in CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying game. The U.S. MNT lost to Mexico 2-1 last Friday in Columbus, Ohio.
With Tuesday’s loss the United States becomes the second team to start 0-2 in the hexagonal format since it was adopted before the 1998 World Cup.
For the Ticos the goals were scored via Johan Venegas at the 44th minute play, Christian Bolaños at the 68th minute and Joel Campbell finished with 2 goals at the 74th and 78th minutes of the game.
The U.S. MNT moves to 6-9-3 vs. Costa Rica in World Cup Qualifying and 0-9-1 all-time in qualifiers played on Costa Rican soil.
“It is not about blaming anyone of the players, it’s about it’s about taking it, swallow it, taking responsibility which I do, and find a way to get that corrected,” said U.S. MNT’s head coach Jurgen Klinsmann during a press conference after the game. “At the end of the day I said to the team that it wouldn’t be the last defeat in their careers. It is a bitter moment because we wanted to do better than what we did.”
Jozy Altidore earned his 33rd career World Cup Qualifying cap for the MNT, moving him into a tie for third all-time with DaMarcus Beasley and Tim Howard. The 27-year-old forward ends 2017 with 99 all-time appearances for the USA.
The result sees the USA finish 2016 with a 12-6-1 record.
Mexico – Panama
Mexico and Panama tied 0-0 in its second game of CONCACAF’s World Cup qualifying game; Mexico beat the United States 2-1 last Friday.

Osorio stated after the game his satisfaction with the results over the last 2 games and finished up by saying that he would like to finish first in the group.
