College Football: Arizona falls short against BYU; ASU beats NAU
By Francisco Romero. – Playing at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale against BYU, the Wildcat
knew their task was not going to be easy. Easy was not as Jake Oldroyd kicked a 33-yard field goal with 4 seconds to go thus giving the Cougars an 18-16 victory.
BYU led throughout the game; Arizona took its first lead (16-15) with 1:26 remaining in the game when Nick Wilson ran for a 49-yard touchdown.
Nick Wilson had 138 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Wilson now has 11 100-yard rushing games in his career. It’s his rest 100-yard rushing output since 9/26/15 against UCLA when he had 136 yards on 24 carries.
Quarterback Anu Solomon finished the game with 213 passing yards; he completed 20-for-30 with 2 interceptions.
Senior receiver Nate Phillips had game-highs in catches (seven) and yards (69).
BYU’s running back Jamaal Williams had a career night running for 162 yards.
Cougars quarterback Taysom Hill completed 21-of-29 passes for 202 yards.
ASU Beats NAU 44-13
NAU made an interesting game for three quarters as the Sun Devils barely had a 13-6 lead late in the third quarter.
A 24-point fourth quarter for the Sun Devils was more than enough for the 44-13 victory against the Lumberjacks.
An opening seven-play, 44-yard drive ending up in a Manny Wilkins 13-yard rushing touchdown put ASU first in the scoreboard with 12:50 remaining in the first quarter.
ASU was only able to score a field goal for the rest of the half.
NAU was held scoreless in the first quarter, scoring only on a Griffin Roehler 25-yd field goal in the third quarter.
Sun Devils’ quarterback Manny Wilkins, starting for the first time in his career, finished the game with 180 passing yards completing going 20-for-27.
NAU’s Case Cookus finished the game with 369 passing yards.
Five Sun Devils including Demario Richard, Kalen Ballage, Manny Wilkins, N’Keal Harry and Nick Ralston recorded rushing scores for ASU.
