By Francisco Romero
Saul “El Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto did not disappoint the crowd Saturday night as both fighters left everything they had inside the ring at the Mandalay Bay in Vegas.
At the end Canelo Alavarez was better winning by unanimous decision with the scorecards showing 117-111, 118-110, and 119-10.
With the victory Canelo holds now the WBC world middleweight title.
“I have a lot of respect for Miguel. He is a great champion and a great fighter. We knew going into this fight that it would be a difficult journey. I was fully prepared for what Cotto was going to do in the ring, whether that was take a defense stance or be the aggressor,” said Canelo after the fight.
The win undoubtedly places Canelo as the best middleweight fighter and consolidated his superstar status.
Cotto traded punches with Canelo throughout the fight, but clearly Canelo was just a bit stronger, quicker and hurt the Puerto Rican.
During Canelo’s post fight interview, inside the ring, he acknowledged how far he has come in the sport of boxing, “I have a great trainer and they brings me here from nothing. I didn’t even know what a job was and then we get to this level and shows how good they are. I’m very proud to have these people and more than trainers they’re my family.”
Canelos record stands now at 46-1-1, 32 KOs, while Cotto’s is 40-5, 33 KO’s.
After the fight Canelo did not wait to respond if he would fight Gennady Golovkin next, he even mentioned of putting on the gloves back right away after fighting Cotto.
“I’m not afraid of any fighter. Triple-G is a great fighter, and he is my friend. I have respect for him, but if we do fight it’s going to be at my weight class. I’m the champion, I don’t have to do what he wants.”
