A confident Arizona team was able to stay undefeated at home this season by beating Oregon State 76-54 Sunday night. The Wildcats (23-2, 10-1 Pac 12) are 16-0 at McKale Center with two home games remaining on the schedule.
Arizona had all the answers against the Beavers (13-10, 6-2 Pac 12) and held the Pac 12’s leading scorer, Roberto Nelson, to only 10 points, 12 below his season average.
“Our defense was very good. We knew Roberto Nelson would be more aggressive in the second half. They did a really good job in the second half. We did a good job as a team guarding. Our defense was in tact. That’s why we won the game with the margin that we did,” said Sean Miller after the game.
Arizona was playing without forward Brandon Ashley for the second game in a row since his foot injury. Rondae Hollis‐Jefferson has done a good job of replacing him in the line up. Hollis-Jefferson finished the game with 16 points.
“Rondae (Hollis‐Jefferson) and Aaron (Gordon) combined 14‐for‐25, four‐for‐six at the line, combined for 10 rebounds, 33 points and four assists, three turnovers, three steals and one block. For the 60 minutes that they played, they were very productive,” mentioned Head Coach Sean Miller as he praised the job of both players.
Aaron Gordon finished the game with 17 points to lead the Cats.
The leading scorer for Oregon State was Angus Brand; he finished the game with 14 points.
Arizona remains No. 2 in the latest AP Poll. Syracuse remains in the top spot with a record of 23-0. Arizona is followed by Florida, Wichita State and San Diego State to round up the top 5 teams in the country.
The Wildcats will travel to Tempe this coming Friday (Feb. 14) to take on the Sun Devils at Wells Fargo Arena.
