By Francisco Romero. – In a move that was expected since yesterday, Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera has been removed from the Mexican National Team as of today. Decio de Maria, President of the Mexican Football Federation, made the announcement.
According to various Internet portals Herrera confronted TV Azteca broadcaster Christian Martinoli at the Airport in Philadelphia and assaulted him. A series of videos and pictures have surfaced over the Internet showing some kind of confrontation.
“Violence does not have a place in our society, in the family and much less in any sport,” said de Maria during a press conference. “No one who wants to rule through aggression and not through free speech can be a member of the Mexican Football Federation.
It seemed that Herrera had saved his job by winning the Gold Cup in the victory over Jamaica.
Herrera was thought of as the one who saved El Tri from missing the 2014 World Cup when he took over the team in October of 2013.
“Mexican fans need to be respected, Mexican fans need people who represent what we are set to accomplish in our national sport, we want a healthy spectacle, a familiar one that unites everyone with a passion for the sport,” said de Maria during his press conference.
The next task for El Tri will be to hire a new head coach.
Various names have been mentioned in the media to take over the reigns of the Mexican National Team including, Ricardo “El Tuca” Ferreti, Gustavo Matosas and Victor Manuel Vucetich amongst others.
“We don’t have a timeline to hire a new head coach,” said de Maria, “but that doesn’t mean that our coaches will not continue working with our players to accomplish our goals.”
