Yankees Salvage Last Game of Series Against Diamondbacks
Yankees pitching was just too much for the Arizona Diamondbacks to overcome in the third game of the series on Wednesday night. The Yankees won 4-2, therefore avoiding a three-game sweep at Chase Field.
The Diamondbacks won the first two games, but Yankees right-handed Nathan Eovaldi brought his “A” game to Arizona.
Eovaldi pitched six strong innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 earned run while striking out five.
The starting pitching was only part of the Yankees success Wednesday night, as their trio of relievers showed why they have been labeled as a force to reckon with this season.
Dellin Betances, Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman threw one inning each to shut down the Diamondbacks.
Betances and Miller were credited with the hold, while Chapman saved his 4th game of the season.
Brett Gardner hit a homerun off Diamondbacks starting pitcher Shelby Miller in the first inning.
Miller took the loss after pitching 5.2 innings allowing 10 hits and giving up 3 earned runs; Miller struck out 5.
On the offensive side Arizona was only able to get 2 hits of Yankees pitching.
“You’re not going to win many games getting two hits,” said Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale after the game. “We had some battle at bats, but Eovaldi really had good stuff tonight. He used his split and his breaking ball. Then when you get to those last three, it’s tough.”
The Diamondbacks have an off day on Thursday and will get back on the field Friday for a weekend series against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
