(Phoenix, Ariz.) — Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela is applauding and thanking Volaris for adding new direct air service between Hermosillo, Mexico and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The airline, Mexico’s second largest, will offer twice weekly flights between Phoenix and Hermosillo beginning in November. The flights already are viewable on the airline’s website at volaris.com.
“As chairman of the city council’s Downtown, Aviation and Redevelopment Subcommittee, I understand the huge economic impact and potential of Sky Harbor and direct international air service to Phoenix,” Vice Mayor Valenzuela said. “International service at Phoenix Sky Harbor generates $3 billion each year in economic activity here in the Valley, and Volaris’ new direct route between Hermosillo and Phoenix increases our connectivity with our number one trading partner. This is a critical component in our comprehensive plan to grow trade and increase economic cooperation. Currently, billions of trade dollars are going to other competing markets. Volaris’ new flights show real progress in bringing those trade dollars to Arizona and strengthening the economic highway between our city and our neighbors to the south.”
Mexico is the top export location for Arizona-based companies and Hermosillo is a key manufacturing hub. An Arizona State University study on the impact of direct air service also has shown that foreign visitors spend $388 million locally each year. International flights also have been credited with creating 15,000 local jobs.
