The United States started the 2015 Gold Cup play just as they finished in 2013, with a win. Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad beat Honduras 2-1 Tuesday night at Frisco, TX.
Clint Dempsey scored twice for U.S.A., his first goal went into the nets at the 25th minute of play and the second one was scored in the second half at the 64th minute.
Surprisingly Honduras controlled the ball and the tempo at the beginning of the first half, but after Dempsey scored the first goal the momentum changed as the US was able to prevent Honduras from scoring during the first :45 minutes.
The second half was played at a more evenly pace; Carlos Discua was able to score for Honduras at the 69th minute cut the United State’s lead 2-1.
That was the final score and the United States was able to obtain its first 3 points.
Dempsey scored his sixth and seventh career Gold Cup goals, giving him sole possession of fourth place on the U.S. Men National Team’s all-time Gold Cup scoring list. Dempsey has now scored at least one goal in four editions of the tournament. (2005, 2007, 2011, 2015) His first Gold Cup game goal came exactly 10 years ago.
The United States is looking to build on the success the team has had in the Gold Cup. U.S.A. has won three of the last five Gold Cups and had a strong showing in the 2014 World Cup.
The U.S.A. won all six of its matches in capturing the Gold Cup for the fifth time in 2013 after losing to Mexico in the final in 2009 (5-0) and 2011 (4-2).
U.S.A. could tie Mexico for most Gold Cup championships with six by winning the 2015 tournament.
Panama – Haiti
Panama and Haiti faced each other in the other Gold Cup game played on Tuesday and ended up in a 1-1 tie.
Panama took the lead in the game when Alberto Quintero scored at the 55th minute.

With the tie both teams obtain 1 point in Group A.
