The Stage is set and so are the Teams for Copa America Centenario Finals: Argentina Vs. Chile
By Francisco Romero. – First it was Mexico (7-0) and Wednesday it was Colombia’s turn to be defeated by Chile (2-0) and now the team from the Andes will face Argentina for the Copa America Centenario Championship.
Argentina eliminated the United States and was waiting for the Colombia – Chile winner, and there you have it.
The game was played at Soldier Field in Chicago where there was a two-hour delay due to weather (electrical storm).
Chile entered the game not having beaten Colombia in more than five years, but a strong start to the game placed the Rojos ahead 2-0 and they never looked back.
Charles Aranguiz scored at the 7th minute of play while Jose Pedro Fuenzalida scored at the 11th minute.
The Final will give an opportunity for Argentina to avenge last year’s Copa America loss to Chile, a game that ended up in a 0-0 draw, Chile eventually won in a penalty shootout.
Colombia will face the United States for third place on Saturday in Glendale, Arizona.
“It takes a lot of effort to get to a final and the fact that we are there is really comforting,” said Chile’s head coach Juan Antonio Pizzi after the game. “We were aggressive getting to the ball, once we got to it we really focused on taking care business, once we scored the first goal, the pressure was on Colombia.”
The Colombian players talked about going back home with their heads held high, “Our thoughts were that we could make it to the finals, we thought that everything was possible, we had faith, but not all things turn out as we would like, we gave it all we had, we put forth all of our effort and we are going back home even-minded,” said Juan Cuadrado after the game.
