St. Louis Cardinals top prospect Oscar Taveras was killed in a car accident early Sunday.

The Cardinals’ released a statement Sunday afternoon.

“We are all stunned and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of the youngest members of the Cardinals family,” Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said.   “Oscar was an amazing talent with a bright future who was taken from us well before his time. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends tonight.”

“I simply can’t believe it,” said John Mozeliak, Sr. VP & GM of the St. Louis Cardinals. “I first met Oscar when he was sixteen years old and will forever remember him as a wonderful young man who was a gifted athlete with an infectious love for life who lived every day to the fullest.” 

It has been reported that the accident took place in the City of Puerto Plata and that Taveras was behind the wheel of a 2014 red Camaro with his girlfriend.

During the 2014 baseball season, Taveras batted .239, with 3 homeruns and 22 RBI’s.

During the postseason he had 3 hits in seven at bats with a home run. 

Taveras signed with the Cardinals in 2008 at 16 years old.

World Series: Giants take 3-2 Lead  

The San Francisco Giants took a step closer to winning their third World Series since 2010 by shutting out the Kansas City Royals 5-0 in game 5.

Giants’ pitcher Madison Bumgarner pitched a gem; he pitched a complete game allowing only 4 hits.

The Giants were leading 1-0 in the fourth inning; Travis Ishikawa hit a grounder that went by Alcides Escobar putting two runners on

 

base.  Brandon Crawford hit a blooper that Jarrod Dyson bobbled scoring Pablo Sandoval.

The Giants scored three more runs in the eighth inning to seal the game.

Game 6and 7 (if necessary) (Tuesday and Wednesday) will move to Kansas City.
