Social Media Reacts to Friday’s Northern Arizona University Shooting

A confrontation between students became deadly early Friday morning on the Northern Arizona University campus. Police said a freshman pulled out a gun and shot four students, killing one and injuring three.

After news of the shooting at NAU was made public, students at the university and many others took to social media to express their concerns, condolences and to stay informed on the details of the shooting that occurred in a campus parking lot at around 1:20 a.m. Friday.

Police identified the shooter as 18-year-old Steven Jones.

NAU President Rita Cheng released a statement early Friday morning and said, “We awoke this morning to a terrible tragedy on our Flagstaff campus.”

Gov. Doug Ducey and U.S. Senator John McCain also released statements, offering prayers for those involved and for the entire Flagstaff community.

Later Friday morning, NAU released the names of the victims. The three students that were wounded and were treated at Flagstaff Medical Center are Nicholas Prato, Kyle Zientek and Nicholas Piring. The deceased student is Colin Brough.

Brough was an associate member of The Delta Chi Fraternity, and a member of The Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Students gave their condolences to the victims and community on twitter, and said their thoughts are with the NAU fraternity.
 
The accused shooter was charged with one count of first-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault, and is being held on a $2 million bond after his initial court appearance on Friday afternoon.
