The “Wolves” singer is Billboard magazine’s Woman of the Year and in the cover story talks about her relationship with Justin, as well as her relationships with former child stars Demi Lovato, Miley Cyrus and Nick and Joe Jonas.

“I’m 25. I’m not 18, or 19, or 20, the “Bad Liar” singer told the mag. “I cherish people who have really impacted my life. So maybe before, it could have been forcing something that wasn’t right. But that doesn’t mean caring for someone ever goes away. And [that goes for] people in general,” Gomez continued, referring to her fellow Disney alums, “We’ve gone through seasons in our lives. I don’t think it’s as serious as people make things out to be half the time. It’s just my life. I grew up with all of these people, and it’s so cool to see where everybody is.”

Of Gomez’s breakup with The Weeknd, the pop star says she is “really proud” of their “true friendship.” She explained, “I truly have never experienced anything like that in my life. We ended it as best friends, and it was genuinely about encouraging and caring [for each other]. And that was pretty remarkable for me.”

Gomez went on to talk about the effect tabloid stories have on her, saying “For a while I just wanted to defend myself. I wanted to scream and say, ‘You have no idea! I’m allowed to do this!” and says things hit a fever pitch when she realeased “The Heart Wants What It Wants” about her relationship with Bieber. It “was the first time I had shared a lot of where I was in my personal life. Would I like people to care about worldly things that matter? Things that should actually be discussed more? Yes. But I can’t control that. And I don’t want to.”

The A Rainy Day in New York star also opened up about her recent surgery, the trajectory her career has taken and how she’s learned to accept herself and where she is.
