Arizona set a new school record by finishing with 787 yards of total offense and a 58-13 win over UNLV. Quarterback Anu Solomon
guided the Wildcats offense with 424 passing yard, he also ran for 50 yards on 8 carries.
Those stats alone, makes you wonder if redshirts quarterback Solomon is truly a freshman. Solomon set a freshmen school record for passing yardage.
“Anu (Solomon) did a good job keeping his poise even though he missed a lot of throws early, but it was a good win and we’ll learn from it,” said Arizona’s Head Coach Rich Rodriguez after the game.
Solomon admitted he could have been better, “The little things need to be cleaned up. I felt slow today and also not holding the ball as
long. I felt that we could have gained more yards. We have great wide receivers, a great group of guys.”
Solomon connected with 10 different receivers.
On the ground Terris Jones-Grigsby finished the game with 124 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, Nick Wilson finished with 104 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Arizona’s defense held UNLV to 252 passing yards and 119 rushing yards. Scooby Wright had 8 tackles and a sack.
UNLV did not get on the scoreboard until the second quarter with a field goal. By half time the score was 24-6.
Rodriguez will not make a final assessment of the team’s performance until watching film, ““I thought our guys competed well. I’m sure after I watch the film there’s going to be a lot of things that we need to get corrected. In fact, I know with not even watching the film that we have to get some execution issues corrected on offense and defensively we didn’t do a good job getting off blocks in time. But our guys competed well and kept their poise.”
And by the way, although he didn’t play like one, Solomon did feel like a freshman in some ways, “I had a little jitters and I think you could see them with some of my bad passes. Overall, I felt more anxious than nervous.”
Arizona will travel to San Antonio to face UTSA next Thursday.
