Pope Francis is back in Rome.
The Pope left Philadelphia Sunday and arrived in Rome early Monday morning, marking the end of a historic trip to U.S. soil.
Before his departure, Francis was met for a goodbye by Vice President Joe Biden, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, as well as a performance by a high school band.
He then boarded the American Airlines plane back home, giving one last wave to the American people through his window.
During his final speech at the airport, he thanked everyone who helped prepare for his visit, and said he’s leaving the U.S. with “a heart full of gratitude and hope.”
Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S. began last Tuesday in Washington D.C., where he was greeted by President Obama and his family. From there, he visited the White House and became the first pope to address Congress.
In the next couple of days, Francis then flew to New York, where he addressed the United Nations, visited the 9/11 Memorial and held Mass at Madison Square Garden. Later in Philadelphia, he stood at Independence Hall, where he gave a speech on religious freedom, immigration and tolerance.
