Phoenix own Benavidez Brothers Making Noise in the Boxing World
By Francisco Romero
Middleweight boxer David Benavidez knocked out Kevin Cobbs in the second round of the match on Tuesday night on Premier Boxing Champions televised on Fox Sports 1.
With ease and no mercy Benavidez, 19, shut down Cobbs who is 12 years older than his opponent.
At his young age, Benavidez looked strong, focused and convincing.
In the first round Benavidez tested his opponent and found out that he was stronger, quicker and could finish him soon.
In the second round Benavidez came right after his opponent digging lefts and rights to the head and body. Cobbs backed up into the ropes and was nailed by a double left to the head. Cobbs tried to escape, but the young Benavides was all over him; the referee had no choice, but to go in there and stop the beating.
Benavidez’s record stands now at 12-0; 11 KO’s, while Cobbs record is now at 10-2; 2 KO’s. Cobb had won four fights in a row.
Benavidez turned 19 last month (December) and could very well be on his way to becoming the youngest all-time middleweight champion.
Darrin Van Horn became super middleweight champion at the age of 20 years, 4 months and 28 days back in 1989.
Before this fight, Benavidez won his four previous bouts by knockouts in 2015; his most recent victory came on a spectacular knockout over Felipe Romero in November.
David’s older brother, welterweight Jose Benavidez Jr. is 24-0 and considered one of boxing future stars.
Jose beat Sidney Siqueira by unanimous decision on December 12 of last year in Tucson, Arizona.
Their father Jose Benavides Sr. trains the Benavidez brothers.
