PHOENIX – The Phoenix Mercury will honor U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast, Jordyn Wieber, as the team’s 2014 Woman of Inspiration during its August 2 game against the Indiana Fever. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

The annual event will honor Wieber for her commitment and dedication to her gymnastics career, academics and the community. Wieber and other local women will be recognized throughout the evening’s game in addition to participating in a Q&A with fans at halftime.

“We are thrilled to honor Jordyn Wieber this year as our Woman of Inspiration,” said Jason Rowley, Phoenix Mercury president. “Jordyn’s dedication to the sport of gymnastics and her education makes her a positive role model for young women everywhere, and we are excited to welcome her to our Mercury family.”

Wieber is a member of the 2012 gold medal-winning U.S. women’s gymnastics team, nicknamed the “Fierce Five.” The 2012 team is only the second in U.S. history to win the Olympic team gold medal in gymnastics, the first being the “Magnificent Seven,” who won gold in the 1996 Olympics.  Wieber’s accomplishments also include an all-around and team gold medal in the 2011 World Championships along with being a three-time American Cup all-around champion in 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Currently a psychology major at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), Wieber continues to train in gymnastics and work as a manager for the school’s gymnastics team.

Wieber joins an elite group of inspiring women who have been honored by the Mercury, including Robin Roberts (2007), Ali Vincent, the first female Biggest Loser (2008), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (2009), Billie Jean King (2010), Picabo Street (2011), Hope Solo (2012) and Lisa Fernandez (2013).

Tickets are available for the Mercury-Storm matchup tomorrow (June 3) at US Airways Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.  Fans can visitphoenixmercury.com to purchase tickets.
