By Francisco Romero. – Two-time Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez was to have the fight of his life Friday night against Chris “The Hit man” Avalos at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada.

It turned out to be business as usual for the Nogales, Sonora Mexico native.

Valdez had little trouble in defeating Avalos by technical knockout in the fifth round of the fight.

Valdez was not only the better fighter inside the ring, but the strongest one as he sent Avalos to the mat in the third round and punished him hard during the fourth and fifth rounds.

A combination of punches throughout the fight kept Valdez ahead, but his left hook was lethal in the third round and then again in the fifth round to finish Avalos.

The fight was stopped at 1:17 of the fifth round by referee Russell Mora.

Valdez, who moved up to featherweight for the fight, most likely will purse a featherweight title in the near future.

Although not as tough as expected, the win against Avalos Friday night places Valdez as one of the top prospects in boxing; his record stand now at 18-0 with 15 of those victories coming by way of TKO.

With the loss, Avalos record stands at 26-4.

Valdez represented Mexico in the 2008 and again in the 2012 Olympics.

In the same card Jesse “Hard Work” Hart (18-0, 15 TKO) beat Aaron Pryor Jr (19-9-1, 12 TKO) by knock out in the ninth round for the NABO and the USBA title; while Mike Reed (16-0, 9 TKO) beat Antonio Cañas (10-2-1, 4 TKO) by knockout in the fifth round of the fight.
