Legendary Boxer Ali Dead at 74 Years Old
By Francisco Romero. – According to a family spokesperson, the self-proclaimed “The Greatest” Muhammad Ali died at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona at the age of 74.
Since 1984 Ali has battled Parkinson’s disease.
Born as Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., Ali will be known as one of the greatest heavy weight boxers of our era; the three-time world champion displayed skill, agility and power inside the ring like no other.
Ali was born in Louisville, KY on January 17, 1942.
He retired from boxing in 1981; his legacy will live forever as he has been inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame as well as several others.
After the announcement of his death Friday night, not only the boxing world, but the sports world in its entirety is in mourning his death.
“Muhammad Ali was the man who came to revolutionize the sport of boxing,” said three-time NABF Champion Nico Perez. “He came into our sport and was far more than a boxer, he was a great athlete, a great entertainer; he not only stepped into the ring throwing punches, but gave the fans something never seen before. Without a doubt, Ali was the best boxer we have ever seen, I am glad I was able to meet him.”
Ali finished his boxing career with a record of 56-5 and stepped into the ring against the best in the sports such as Cleveland Williams, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Sonny Liston and Leon Spinks amongst others.
The Greatest catch phrase “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee,” has become a worldwide known phrase used to describe the way Ali fought; his trash talking style was used to get into his opponent’s head and psychologically punish them.
Without a doubt, Ali was like no other sports figure we have seen in the last one hundred years.
