Miss Universe: Miss Colombia Gets Mistakenly Crowned as Winner
This might just be the most awkward moment in Miss Universe history.
It all started at this year’s pageant Sunday night in Las Vegas, where host Steve Harvey made what could be a contestant’s biggest fear a reality — announcing the wrong winner.
Instead of announcing Miss Philippines, Pia Wurtzbach as the rightful winner, the “Family Feud” host crowned Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez Arevalo, who was meant to be this year’s first runner-up.
The host realized his mistake after Gutierrez Arevalo had already been crowned and given her winning sash. The contestant from Colombia was then declared runner-up and surrendered her crown to Miss Philippines.
A video of Gutierrez backstage was shared on the pageant’s official page, which shows her addressing fans. “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy for all that I did.”
Harvey took to Twitter soon after to send out an apology. The Tweet was deleted soon after:
Gutierrez first runner-up spot was followed by Miss USA Olivia Jordan.
