Misael Rodriguez Secures Mexico’s First Medal Rio 2016
It is not over yet, but boxer Misael Rodriguez has secured Mexico’s first medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Rodriguez beat Egyptian Hosam Hussein Bakr Abdin, in the 75 kg. to move on to the semifinals.
Rodriguez will face the winner of the bout between India’s Vikas Krishan Yadavand Bektemir Melikuziev from Uzbekistan.
In a hard fought combat the Mexican fighter was cautious and landing body punches to his opponent. Abdin went right to Rodriguez’s head, but Rodriguez was able to avoid being punched.
During the second round Rodriguez kept punishing Abdin with punches throught the body; in a frustration move Abdin landed a low blow to Rodriguez.
The third round belonged entirely to the Rodriguez as he landed a series of right-handed punches on Abdin’s body sending him backwards.
At the end of the fight Rodriguez won by unanimous decision and a right for a semifinal match, thus securing at least a bronze medal.
The last time Mexico won an Olympic medal in boxing was at Sydney 2000, Cristian Bejarano won a bronze medal in the lightweight division.
Surprisingly leading up to the second week of Olympic competition, this is Mexico’s first medal in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
In London 2012 Mexico won 7 medals.
With Rodriguez assuring a medial Boxing is tied with diving with 13 total medals in Mexico’s Olympic competition history.
US Boxing
The United States boxing team dropped two tough bouts on Monday.
American flyweight Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) dropped his second bout of the Olympic Games in a match-up with Uzbekistan’s Fazliddin Gaibnazarov.
Lightweight Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, Calif.) competed in her second bout of the tournament on Monday as well and lost a close decision in a hard-fought battle with Russia’s Anastasiia Beliakova.
