Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera has signed a deal to stay as Mexico’s soccer head coach through the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
“The deal had been, previously, put in place and verbally agreed upon, all we needed to do was sign it,” said Herrera during a ceremony to honor him in Mexico City.
“I will remain head coach as long as I bring results, our main objective is to qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Russia,” he added.
The colorful head coach became an instant sensation during the 2014 Brazil World Cup. His animated style of coaching, the way he celebrated and Mexico’s success in Brazil 2014 made him an icon of the World Cup.
Other objectives in Herrera’s plans are to win the Gold Cup and the Copa America.
“I am very happy with the deal we agreed upon, it was a good deal we made with the federation,” concluded Herrera.
Details of the contract were not disclosed and Herrera did not want to go in detail about it. He just said it was a four-year deal.
In the Copa America, Mexico was placed in Group A along with Chile, Bolivia and Ecuador.
The Gold Cup will be played next year in the United States.
“El Piojo” took over El Tri on October of 2013. He replaced Victor Manuel Vucetich, becoming the fourth national head coach in a month.
His one-year contract was due to expire this month.
Herrera has been Mexico’s head coach for 19 games so far; he has a record of 12 wins, 4 draws and 3 losses.
