Mexico started World Cup play just as it was expected. Cameroon never really got it going, it never really had a chance against a Mexican team that showed up focused and determined to win their opening game despite the weather conditions.
The lone goal by Oribe Peralta sent thousands of El Tri fans screaming throughout the world.
Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan annulled two goals by Giovani Dos Santos, the first one was clearly off side, but the second one should have been a goal.
Cameroon had a few opportunities to score. Mexico’s goalie Memo Ochoa did a great job of stopping those opportunities.
“We played a good game, we should have scored more,” said Mexico’s Head Coach Miguel “El Piojo” Herrara during an interview after the game with Univison.
Mexico’s next opponent will be Brazil next Tuesday. Brazil defeated Croatia on Thursday by a score of 3-1.
Now Mexico and Brazil are tied with 3 point each in Group A, while Cameroon and Croatia have zero points. Cameroon and Croatia will face each other next Wednesday.
Both Mexico and Cameroon knew the importance of winning the first game and obtaining three points. With another win, in group play, Mexico has a very good chance of advancing.
The United States will open World Cup play Sunday against Portugal.
