By Francisco Romero. – Everything seemed to be going in the right direction for the Mexican National Team, as it was beating Argentina 2-0 and most of the 82,559 fans in attendance at TT&T Stadium, were expecting to witness El Tri’s first victory over Argentina since 2004.

But, here comes the so-called best soccer player in the world to spoil the party.

Argentina’s Lionel Messi showed why he is considered a phenom of the sport; Messi scored at the 89th minute of the game to tie the game at 2 and thus avoiding the upset.

“In a game against the World Cup’s runner-up you can’t expect to be winning 2-0 and pretend that the result will be as such,” said Mexico’s interim head coach Ricardo Ferretti after the game.  “They are a powerful team, one that can score at any time during the game.”

It was a game that was dominated by Argentina, in terms of possession of the ball, but Mexico was able to play toe-to-toe against a sometimes, unfocused Argentinian team.

Mexico’s first goal came on a penalty kick scored by Javier “El Chicharito” Hernandez at the 19th minute of the game.

Chicharito had other opportunities during the first half of the game, but could not finish them.

Hector Herrera scored the second goal for Mexico at the 70th minute of play.

For Argentina, Sergio Agüero scored the first goal at the 85th minute of the game.

Mexico’s next game will be against the United States in a CONCACAG playoff match on October 10th at the Rose Bowl.

Mexico’s interim coach said he would take a good look at the video of the games played against Trinidad and Tobago and Argentina to determine who will make up the team that will face the United States.

“It is not that complicated,” said Ferretti, “I will take my time and decide.”
