Mexico and Honduras Tied at One in Friendly; Chicharito is Out With Injury
By Francisco Romero. – In preparation for the Gold Cup, Mexico played a friendly game against Honduras Wednesday night at RNG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The game ended in a 0-0 tie in front of 70,128 fans in the stands.
The tie is the least of the problems for El Tri; Mexico’s head coach Miguel “El Piojo” Herrera now has to worry about replacing Javier “El Chicharito” Hernandez.
El Chicharito left the game with an injury at the 39th minute of the game. He scuffled with Brayan Beckles for the ball and rolled to the ground, apparently injuring his shoulder.
Reports indicate that he injured his collarbone.
Oribe Peralta replaced Hernandez after the injury.
With Chicharito out of the Gold Cup, it no longer enters the tournament as the favorite.
Against Honduras Wednesday night Mexico seemed to be in control of the game early on, with Chicharito Hernandez leading the way, once he was out Mexico played scrappy.
It is way to soon to speculate on a time frame for the return of Chicharito to El Tri.
As of late, Mexico has been struggling to win. Herrera’s team tied 2-2 last Saturday against Costa Rica.
“Maybe we did not play a great game against Costa Rica, but we played a lot better during the second half and today’s game we did not win it because the ball did not want to get in. Those are issues that are not scripted, but I see us playing well and focused. What we have to do now is play a complete game, from now on the games are going to get tougher,” said Mexico’s head coach Miguel Herrera after the game.
Mexico will face Cuba July 9th in the first game of the Gold Cup; the game will be played in Chicago.
Honduras will face the United States in Frisco, TX July 7th.
