Mexico has lost an icon in journalism.

The death of Jacobo Zabludovsky was confirmed Thursday morning.  He is recognized as Mexico’s longest-serving and most-polemic television news anchor.

Arturo Corona, the news manager for Zabludovsky’s radio program confirmed his death, and Televisa took to twitter to say he died of a stroke at the age of 87.

Known for his energetic personality, he’s managed to anchor Mexico’s most-watched news program for almost 30 years, until 1998, and was frequently criticized for overwhelmingly pro-government coverage.

One of the most highlighted moments of his career was in 1985, when he covered Mexico’s 1985 earthquake, which killed almost 10,000 people.

Equipped with an early version of a mobile phone, Zabludovsky gave viewers a tour of the stunning damage in the city’s center.
