By Francisco Romero. – Another fight, another win for Floyd Mayweather Jr., this time around it was Andre Berto who stepped into the ring, Saturday night, with the same result of 49 other opponents, a defeat, thus improving Mayweather’s record to 49-0 with 26 KOs.
The fight took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena with 13,395 in attendance.
After the fight Mayweather claimed that he is done with competitive boxing, whether it’s true or not remains to be seen.
“You got to know when to hang it up, “I’m close to 40 years old. I’ve been in this sport for 19 years. I have nothing left to prove,” said Mayweather after the fight.
Former champion Andre Berto was no contest for Mayweather; the judge’s scorecards looked as follows: 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111, all in favor of Mayweather.
“Experience played a big part,” said Berto during after the fight. “He has a lot of speed, and he’s real crafty. He did a lot of little things to get me off my rhythm.”
Berto looked overmatch throughout the fight, “I tried to put on a great performance and push him to the limit. But he is where he is for a reason. Floyd’s one of the best, for sure,” said Berto.
Berto’s record stands now at 30-4, with 23 KOs.
It appeared that Mayweather injured his left hand in the ninth round, but it did not make a difference towards the end of the fight, “It doesn’t matter if I hurt my left or my right hand,” said Mayweather afterwards.
We’ll just have to wait and see what Mayweather’s next move is for now he says, “My career is over.” “I’m leaving the sport with all my faculties, still sharp, still smart.”
If Mayeweather retires with his current record of 49-0, he will match Rocky Marciano’s mark at retirement.
