Latino Artists Owned The 2018 American Music Awards
Jorge Rodriguez-Jimenez of mitú tells us about how Latinos Cardi B, Camila Cabello, Jennifer Lopez, Bruno Mars, Maluma, Bad Bunny and J. Blavin dominated the 2018 American Music Awards.-
Latinos have become a driving force in the music industry and there’s a reason why. Music is part of our culture. Every group has their own specific dance and music style. How many of you spent hours with abuela or abuelo learning the different dances so you could show off at the family reunions? Here’s how the American Music Awards (AMAs) went down and who came out as the winners of the night.
First, let’s talk about all of the awards Latinos took home last night.
Latinos took home eight awards last night including some of the top awards of the night. Cardi B and Camila Cabello battled it out for the most AMA awards and Cabello pulled ahead with one more award than Cardi B.
Camila Cabello snagged four awards.
The Cuban-Mexican pop star won Favorite Song – Pop/Rock with “Havana,” Favorite Music Video for “Havana,” Collaboration of The Year for “Havana” with Young Thug and was honored as the New Artist of the Year. Cabello thanked her fans every time she accepted an award because she wouldn’t be where she was today without them.
“I want to thank my fans,” Cabello said when accepting the New Artist of the Year award. “Thank you so much for having my back.”
Cardi B was just behind Cabello with three awards of her own.
That’s right. The new mommy walked away from the AMAs with three awards. She won Favorite Song – Soul/R&B for “Finesse” with fellow Latino Bruno Mars, Favorite Song – Rap/Hip Hop for “Bodak Yellow” and Favorite Artist – Rap/Hip Hop.
Bruno Mars shared his award with Cardi B.
He took home Favorite Song – Soul/R&B for “Finesse.” The song was a phenomenon when it was released and took over social media and radio stations across the country.
Daddy Yankee came through for Puerto Rico with his own win.
Daddy Yankee left with Favorite Artist – Latin. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since Daddy Yankee’s musical career was definitely experiencing a revival like no other thanks to the wild success of “Despacito.”
But snagging trophies wasn’t the only thing that Latinos did at the AMAs. They also brought the house down.
The performance of the night was Cardi B, J Balvin and Bad Bunny. A Spanish bit shook the audience to their core. It is the American Music Awards after all and a lot of people in the U.S. speak Spanish. In fact, there are more Spanish speakers in the U.S. than there are people in Spain making the U.S. the second country for Spanish speakers behind Mexico.
Camila Cabello brought the audience to a stand still with her spellbinding performance of “Consequences.”
The singer gave fans a toned down performance. She was wearing a formal gown and was accompanied by an orchestra as she belted out the heartbreaking ballad.
It’s basically mandatory to have Jennifer Lopez perform at every music award show at this point and she doesn’t disappoint.
he Puerto Rican superstar sang “Limitless,” which is a song from her new movie “Second Act.” Lopez told reporters on the red carpet that the song was written by Sia specifically for the movie and she was excited to bring new life to the song on stage.
But the most talked about moment from the show was of Mariah Carey performing live for the first since her NYE debacle.
Honestly, the fact that so many mane popped out of her dress as she performed should be seen as iconic. However, it was not enough to distract people from what a lot of people are saying was Carey lip syncing during her AMAs performance.
The skepticism since her NYE performance is still strong.
The shaaaaaaaade of it all.
What was your favorite part of the 2018 American Music Awards?”
