This time around he made his weight, was focused and most importantly won convincingly. In a rematch, Julio Cesar Chavez defeated Bryan Vera in a supper middleweight bout by unanimous decision.
Back in September 2013 the same two fighters faced each other in Carson, California where Chavez Jr. won by decision, but by most experts accounts he was beaten. The judge’s decision took everyone by surprise.
Saturday’s match up was held at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. All three judge’s scorecards had Chavez Jr. winning the match (117-110, 117-110 and 114-113).
Chavez Jr. was just too much for Vera; he was stronger, quicker and in great shape.
“I was able to make weight a week before the fight,” said Chavez Jr. through an interpreter. “Making the weight was not a problem, it never made me weaker,” he added.
By all accounts it was a great fight. Both boxers came in exchanging punches. Vera was also well prepared for the fight, but Chavez Jr’s preparation and focus took the best out of Vera.
Chavez admitted his hand was hurt in the bout and that kept him from knocking out Vera, “I concentrated on winning every round,” he added.
Chavez Jr. looked to be in the best shape of his career, he looked like the fighter many of his followers have been hoping to see for years.
Vera’s grit inside the ring, on both fights against Chavez Jr., has been noticed and it is expected to pay dividends in the near future for him.
With Saturday’s performance Chavez Jr. is expected to look for a big purse fight in the coming months. The Question is whom will he face? Could it be Gennady Golovkin or maybe Sergio Martinez?
We shall find out soon.
