Ilia Calderón Becoming Univision’s First Afro-Latina Co-Anchor

She is set to replace the iconic anchor, Maria Elena Salinas whose been in the chair for over 30 years. Salinas congratulated Calderón, “Happy that my dear and beautiful colleague @iliacalderon takes command of Noticiero Univision. Not only a great journalist and a good mother but with a great sensitivity to the needs of our Hispanic community. Proud of you dear Illi!”

This isn’t the first time Calderón has reached the distinction of first Afro-Latina anchor. Her career began in Colombia, her native country, where she anchored a local newscast in Medellín.She then became the first black woman to ever host Noticiero CMI, a national news program in her country. In 2001, she moved to Miami and marked another first as Telemundo’s first black anchor at the network when it launched a weekend newscast. In 2007 she joined Univision for its Primer Impacto weekend edition and two years later she was promoted to co-host its prime weekday slot. Calderón is currently co-anchor of Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna which airs at 11:30 pm.

Beginning Monday, December 11th, the Emmy-award winning journalist debuts her new role. During an interview with Forbes, she stated, “Happy, but at the same time, a little nervous. I’m so honored they gave me this amazing opportunity. It’s an enormous responsibility to sit in Maria Elena’s chair because she has kept the highest standards in journalism.”

In a statement from Univision News’ president, Daniel Coronell, he said, “Ilia’s professionalism and experience, together with her personal charisma, journalistic integrity, knowledge of the U.S. Hispanic community and proven appeal with our diverse audience make her the ideal person to succeed Maria Elena Salinas.”
