Golden State Warriors Beat Spurs for 72nd Win of the Season Tying NBA Record
By Francisco Romero
The Chicago Bulls of the mid-90’s are called one of the best dynasties in NBA history; during the ’95-’96 season they finished with 72 victories and a new NBA record in wins.
The 2015-16 Golden State Warriors tied that record by beating the San Antonio Spurs Sunday night 92-86.
Ironically, Golden State’s head coach Steve Kerr, who is in his second year leading the Warriors, was a key reserve on the record-setting 95-96 Bulls team.
The Warriors had lost 33 straight games in San Antonio.
“Five years ago when we got this core together, you don’t think about 72 wins, you think about getting to championship level and have that expectation every year; but for us to get to this point, God is good,” said Warrior’s Stephen Curry after the game.
“We got a great group of guys that really sacrifice every single night, we are competitive, hungry we care about each other and I think we try to play the right way, good things happen when you put that kind of combination together,” Curry added.
Curry finished the game with 37 points and 5 assists.
Golden State’s head coach Steve Kerr, was very happy for the team’s accomplishment with a chance to break the record, “Everybody is excited, we just beat a great, great team. Obviously we had a tough task back to back and it is one of the best victories of the year,” said Kerr after the game.
The Warriors will have a chance to break the record against the Grizzlies on Wednesday at home.
Golden State’s record stands now at 72-9; on the road the Warriors have established a new NBA record at 34-7.
The Warriors are looking to win back-to-back NBA championships as they won the 2015 NBA Finals.
