Gina Rodriguez Is a Gun-Toting Scientist in ‘Annihilation’
We love it when badass women scientists get to save the day. In Annihilation, directed by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, 28 Days Later), biologist Natalie Portman signs up for a “dangerous, secret expedition” to find her husband (Oscar Isaac). Issac has been attacked (and is on his deathbed with all kinds of tubes sticking out of his face) after things go left in a shape-shifting alien territory known as area X.

And Portman has her brainy, STEM lovin’, gun-totin’ girl squad with her, including Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Before the biologist shows up, there were 12 unsuccessful expeditions (if you know the book). Scientists either disappeared, committed suicide, suffered severe mental trauma or battled aggressive cancers (again, if you know the book).
We’re happy that Paramount dropped this new, creepy trailer with a bit more insight into Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling, unputdownable Southern Reach trilogy because the first trailer left us confused AF. Annihilation is the first book in the series.

Annihilation hits theaters on February 23, but if you wait until March 12, you can stream it on Netflix, which is kinda like a big deal.
Netflix and sci-fi thrill, anyone?
