At the age of 37 Floyd Mayweather Jr. seems to be on top his game and to prove that he is still the best at what he does, his next fight against Marcos Maidana will be of historic proportions. Mayweather will defend two (titles) belts in one single night.
Up for grabs will be the welterweight title (147 lbs.) and the super welter title (154 lbs.).
To obtain both belts, Mayweather had to beat Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
According the ESPNdeportes.com, the World Boxing Council President, Mauricio Sulaiman, approved the defense of both titles.
The only other time a boxer has won two different titles in one night was in 1988 when Sugar Ray Leonard beat Donny Lalonde. Leonard never defended both titles in one fight.
Mayweather beat Maidana on May 3rd in a fight that many had the Argentinian with the victory. Being true to his work Mayweather will fight Maidana once again.
“I don’t have to make any adjustments going into this fight, but he does. I won the fight. If I spar against someone and they win three of 12 rounds against me, that’s a bad day for me. I am a perfectionist and I set the bar so high. Maidana knows in his heart that he didn’t win,” said Mayweather during a press conference promoting the upcoming fight.
Mayweather will enter the ring on September 13 with a record of 46-0 while Maidana has a record of 35 – 4.
“In my first fight against Floyd, I learned that he’s not that great, he’s not that superhuman boxer everybody talks about. If I wouldn’t have been so anxious looking for the knockout, I would have beat him,” said Maidana in regards to his opponent.
The fight will take place in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand.
