First Latino Filmmaker to Win an Oscar for Best Director

Alfonso Cuarón thanked his crew and family during an emotional bilingual acceptance speech. Fox News Latino reports that Cuarón made it a special point to thank his star, Sandra Bullock. “Sandra, you are Gravity. You’re the soul, (and) heart of the film.”

The space-thriller additionally took home an outstanding seven awards, dominating the first half of the 86th Academy Awards ceremony. Included in the immense collection of awards were Best Visual Effects, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Editing and Best Original Score.

Collaborator on the film as well as Cuarón’s long time friend Emmanuel Lubezki, also took home the award for Best Cinematography for his work on the film after six nominations in previous years.

“I truly want to share this award with the cast and crew,” he said during his acceptance speech. “I want to thank my friend and teacher Alfonso Cuarón – your creativity and drive is incredible.”
