Construction at Tempe Town Lake to Begin June 4

TEMPE — Construction for the new Town Lake western dam system will begin on June 4. 

The project will take 18 months to complete and will extend Town Lake by an additional 100 feet.

The steel gate system will allow for more safety and will allow Town Lake to transition into a river during major flow events. 

The new steel gate dam will cost approximately $40.8 million. This is supposedly the largest hydraulically-operated steel gate dam system in the world. 

FAST FACTS:
The steel gate system will consist of:

  • 8 steel gates mounted on a new concrete foundation
  • Each gate is 107 feet long and 17 feet high
  • Each gate weighs approximately 230,000 pounds
