After months of practice and going against each other, the college football season finally arrived for the Arizona State Sun Devils. Ranked number 19 in the latest college football poll, ASU beat Weber State 45 – 13 at a packed Sun Devil Stadium (53,133).
The Sun Devils didn’t waist any time as they took a 10-0 lead during the first quarter. The first touchdown was an 8-yard pass from quarterbacks Taylor Kelly to Gary Chambers.
The Sun Devils cruised throughout the game, as the lead at halftime was 31-0.
ASU’s defense was as effective as the offense against a Weber State team that had its running stopped and its quarterback, Billy Green, under pressure all night long.
Sun Devil’s quarterback Taylor Kelly finished the game with 238 passing yard on 18-of-27.
“I felt amazing, they (offensive line) did a tremendous job of giving me enough time and space to give it to our playmakers,” said Kelly, during an interview after the game with the Pac 12 Network. “Our playmaker did an unbelievable job of catching the football and running the football and putting it in the end zone.”
ASU’s running back D.J. foster finished the night with 147 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Weber State’s quarterback Billy Green threw for 156 yards on 14-29 with 1 touchdown.
The Wildcats of Weber State had plenty of opportunities to score, but never capitalized on their chances.
The next game for the Sun Devils will be September 6 when they travel to Albuquerque to face the Lobos of New Mexico.
ARIZONA VS UNLV
The University of Arizona Wildcats open the season Friday against UNLV at Arizona Stadium in Tucson.
Arizona will feature redshirt freshman quarterback Anu Solomon as its starter.
For Arizona, senior receiver Austin Hill returns after missing last year with an injury.
“It’s good to have Austin back simply because he’s a veteran guy. I think he’s hungry to be back; in fact I’m pretty sure of that. You know he can play all four receiver positions and he’s got great hands. He has a feel for the game and I think he’s even better at game time. He’s one of those guys that are pretty good in practice but he’s better when the lights came on,” said head coach Rich Rodriguez during his weekly press conference.
Kickoff is scheduled at 7:30 pm at Arizona Stadium.
