Civic Space Park’s award-winning sculpture, Her Secret Is Patience, by Janet Echelman, will receive net and lighting improvements this month.
The improvements will include replacing the existing red, blue and orange polyester net with an exact duplicate and replacing the lamps and colored filters that give the sculpture its distinctive presence at night. The planned work does not involve new city funds. Cost savings from the original project allowed the upgrades to be scheduled as part of an extended project warranty plan ahead of the Super Bowl in February.
The net replacement is scheduled to take place on Dec. 1 through 3. The existing net will be removed on Dec. 1, and the new net installed on Dec. 2. During portions of those days, sections of the park will be restricted to ensure public and worker safety.
Upgrades to the sculpture’s lighting will be carried out at the park on Dec. 8 through 12. During that time, portions of the park may also be restricted for safety.
The existing net will be returned to the manufacturer for testing to determine the impact that sun and weather have had on the net structure, strength and colors. The approximately 750-pound polyester net, which is 100 percent recyclable, will be recycled.
Her Secret Is Patience was incorporated into the development of Civic Space Park. Dedicated in April 2009, the park and sculpture have won numerous awards, including a Rudy Bruner Silver Merit Award from the Bruner Foundation and a Crescordia Award for Art in Public Places from Valley Forward.
