(Phoenix, Ariz.) — The official end of the monsoon season is near, but it doesn’t mean the chance of storms has subsided. The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch until tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Valley could expect to see as many as three total inches of rain in this time period.
City of Phoenix storm teams are already on standby, preparing in many ways. Sand is available for free at 12 fire stations. Residents must bring their own bags and shovels.
Phoenix’s Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security also will be closely monitoring the storm from the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). The EOC provides real-time monitoring capabilities and connectivity which is crucial during storm response between the city, county, and other cities in the area.
Other key city departments, including Street Transportation and Public Works, have crews on standby, ready to respond. Crews have prepped and checked all storm response equipment, and are making sure that critical catch basins are clear to ensure proper water drainage.
In addition, the city also recently marked the one-year anniversary of the massive 100-year storm that swept through the Valley on Sept. 8, 2014 by highlighting the completed and planned improvements to the city’s stormwater retention and flood control infrastructure and other key repairs. You can read about those improvements here.
