Chivas USA Erick “El Cubo” Torres Selected to Join Mexican National Team
By Francisco Romero
In his second season with Chivas USA, Erick “El Cubo” Torres has demonstrated that he belongs with the best as an MLS player. This season he was selected to play in the All-Star game against Bayern Munich.
But the best news he received this week came from the Mexican National Team’s Head Coach, Miguel Herrera, as he was selected to
represent his country in two upcoming friendly games. Mexico will face Chile on September 6th; the game will be played at Levi’s Stadium in San Francisco and go against Bolivia on September 9th at Dick’s Sport Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Both friendly games fall under FIFA Dates, as such, teams are required to let the players join their respective national teams.
Torres represented Mexico as a member of the U17, U20 and U23 teams, but did not make the cut to represent Mexico in the Olympics. This is the first team he has been called up by “El Piojo” Herrera to represent the Senior Mexican National Team.
It will be a great test for Torres as Mexico is moving forward with its young talent.
Torres joined Chivas USA last summer and has made his presence felt since his first game, he scored a goal during that first game and has not stopped since.
So far he has scored 21 goals this season.
Torres’ life long dream of playing for the Mexican National team is now a reality. He has been waiting to proudly wear “El Tri’s” uniform.
Along with Torres, other players playing abroad who have been called up include, Giovani Dos Santos, Javier Aquino, Guillermo Ochoa and Andres Guardado.
The rest of the Mexican players selected for the upcoming friendly games will be released in the upcoming days.
